Firefighters’ Memorial Day
This Saturday (4 May) is Firefighters’ Memorial Day. Crews will parade outside their fire stations in memory of all colleagues who have paid the ultimate sacrifice.
We’ll be sharing some photos on our social media channels (@WestMidsFire). It’s also the day of St Florian, the patron saint of firefighters.
Support for Ukraine
Last week we sent more resources to support firefighting colleagues in Ukraine.
Six members of our staff volunteered to drive two fire engines, which we donated with equipment including ladders, thermal imaging cameras and hoses - all previously used across the West Midlands but since replaced.
Deaf Awareness Week begins on Monday 6 May, with a focus on sharing information and resources for children and young people with hearing impairments.
Here at WMFS, we have dedicated members of staff who are trained to communicate in sign language. And we have firefighters who can fit specialist smoke alarms for those who need them.
Fifty years ago, separate fire stations and brigades combined to become West Midlands Fire Service, as we know it today.
To celebrate our 50th anniversary, we are holding a series of celebration open days at a number of our fire stations. These will be in addition to our usual summer open days.
