A rise in burglaries overnight

We are receiving more reports of residential burglaries in the Cheylesmore and Hillfields area during the warmer months.

Between the early hours of this morning, we had five incidents where offenders entered properties to steal car keys, laptops, jewellery, and other valuables. It's been reported two men are trying door handles between 2 - 5 am but have been deterred by digital doorbells and CCTV.

While some of these incidents are forced entry, many have taken advantage of open or insecure doors and windows.

Coventry Police are working around the clock to track down these offenders but we need your help. If you see any suspicious activity or vehicles on your road or properties please call us on 101.

You can also talk to us online via our Live Chat or submit a report. You can also talk to Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.

If you witness a burglary in progress please call 999 immediately.

You can protect your property and vehicles by double checking your windows and doors are shut and locked at night.

We know this can be difficult with the rising temperatures so here are some other ways you can keep your valuables and family safe:

  • Even if you’re just popping out, lock up and secure your home.
  • Consider installing window locks to prevent intruders from easily opening your windows.
  • Consider installing a home security system with visible cameras and alarm systems to deter burglars.
  • Install a digital doorbell or CCTV on your property if you can
  • Keep your valuables out of sight. Close blinds or curtains to prevent prying eyes from scouting your belongings. Shutting the blinds will keep your house cooler.
  • Give a spare key to a trusted neighbour or invest in a secure key lock box.
  • Hosting family or friends in your garden - don’t invite burglars to the party. Keep your side entrance, back door, or garden gate closed/locked.
  • Tidying the garage or dusting off the bikes for summer adventures? Lock up and keep that garage door closed. It takes seconds for thieves to spot and take expensive tools/bikes/motor vehicles.
  • For extra security keep porch doors locked, wheelie bins away from low fences or garages, and sheds secure.
