Dear Residents and Local Businesses, Here is your weekly update from your local neighbourhood Policing Team, Stoke and Wyken, Wyken With the beautiful weather we’ve had this last week, naturally we are all spending more time outside. This brings new challenges to the force. Within Wyken the neighbourhood team has been working with traffic officers (the guys with the fancy cars and fast motorbikes) to tackle the sudden increase in dangerous and illegal riding of E-Bikes and off-road bikes. The two teams working together, neighbourhood with the local knowledge and traffic with all the gear, were able to seize and penalise illegal riders suitably. Criminal activity has been shown to scale directly with temperatures. During the summer months, with the BBC reporting that “between April 2010 and June 2018, violent crime was on average 14% higher when the temperatures were above 20C than when it was below 10C. As socialising is more prevalent with the increased temperatures, alcohol and drug use also increases, this has a knock on effect on violent crime and theft. To combat this neighbourhood officers are spending more time in and around pubs and bars. Parks and public spaces are being patrolled on foot and by bike to cut down on anti social behaviour, drink and drug use. Grassland around the river Sowe is being increasingly worked aswell as Caludon Castle Park and Wyken Croft Nature Park. Upper Stoke With the increase in theft over the warmer days, neighbourhood officers have been increasing work done in plain clothes. Officers are able to go unnoticed until the time to strike comes. Below is a picture of a haul taken by shoplifters from stores around Stoke/Wyken and central Coventry totalling over £1000. Both were arrested when officers in an unmarked vehicle spotted the duo attempting to flee the scene.
In order to combat the dangerous driving and speeding within the Stoke and Wyken area, officers are conducting increased speed watch events. Those that think the law does not apply to them when in their vehicles, breaching the speed limit are dealt with suitably.
Lower Stoke Somebody thought it would be a good idea to throw a bag full of drugs over a primary school fence in the area over the weekend. Drugs were recovered by neighbourhood officers, children made safe and enquiries ongoing.
Neighbourhood officers have been cleaning up the roads this set by seizing vehicles that are untaxed. If you wish to report a vehicle that appears to be untaxed and used or kept on the road, you can let the DVLA know via this link GOV.UK - Vehicle details (dvla.gov.uk). You may also let us know via our webchat.
Lots of us are out and about on our bikes now the weather is turning. Having your bicycle stolen, you’ll know how upsetting it can be. The most important thing to remember is, double lock your bike and register the frame number. Register your frame number on a national bike registration database approved by Secured by Design. The frame number is usually found underneath the bike between the pedals or where the back wheel slots in. If your bike is ever stolen and recovered by the police, it can be traced back to you. Take the same care to lock your bike securely at home as you would on the street. Avoid advertising that you have a bike at home, for example, by removing car roof racks, and creating ‘privacy zones’ on apps like Strava to avoid disclosing your location. If you need a special pen to mark your bike, invisible to thieves just drop by to one of our community events and we would be happy to provide one.
