Don't be blind to the signs |

Afternoon Resident
When the West Midlands Police campaign says "Don't be blind to the signs" in relation to someone you are talking to online, they are often referring to Modern Slavery, Romance Fraud, or Exploitation. Below are the key "signs" to watch for when interacting with someone digitally: 1. Modern Slavery & Exploitation If the person you are messaging seems to be under the control of another: Scripted or Controlled Responses: They may always have someone else speaking for them or seem to be following a script. Limited Information: They cannot provide a home or work address or are vague about their location. Financial Desperation: Despite claims of working long hours, they never have access to their own money or bank accounts. Inconsistent Identity: They may not have possession of their own ID or passport, which is a major red flag for trafficking.
2. Romance Fraud If a new online connection moves a relationship forward rapidly: Refusal to Meet: They consistently make excuses to avoid video calls or meeting in person. Urgent Money Requests: They claim a sudden emergency (medical bills, travel issues, or business crises) and ask for money. Specific Payment Methods: They ask you to pay via wire transfer, gift cards, or cryptocurrency to avoid being traced.
3. Digital Safeguarding & Grooming For younger people, signs of exploitation or grooming include: Gifts or Favours: Being offered money, game credits, or gifts in exchange for photos or information. Isolation: The person tries to move the conversation from a public platform to a private encrypted app like WhatsApp or Snapchat to avoid detection. Pressure for Secrets: They insist that your conversations remain a secret from parents or guardians.
How to Take Action Check a Partner’s History: Use Clare's Law (Domestic Violence Disclosure Scheme) if you are worried about a partner’s past. Report Modern Slavery: Use the Modern Slavery Helpline at 08000 121 700 or the WMP Online Portal. Anonymous Reporting: Contact Crimestoppers at 0800 555 111 if you want to remain anonymous.
