Stay alert to pickpocketing and distraction theft in Wolverhampton
We are reminding people in Wolverhampton to stay vigilant when shopping, using cash machines and spending time in busy areas of the city. Pickpockets and distraction thieves can operate quickly and often deliberately divert a victim’s attention before taking cash, purses, wallets, phones or bank cards. Recent incidents reported to us in Wolverhampton demonstrate why it is important to keep valuables secure and remain aware of what is happening around you.
Keep your belongings close in busy areasIn February, an envelope containing a large amount of cash was stolen from a bag while the victim was shopping at a store in the Mander Centre. We issued an appeal in March as part of our investigation and asked for help identifying two women in connection with the theft. The incident is an important reminder that thieves can take advantage of busy shopping environments, where people may naturally be concentrating on browsing, paying for goods or speaking to others. In another Wolverhampton investigation, a bank card was stolen at the Mander Centre at around 10.40am on 13 May. Several hundred pounds in cash was subsequently withdrawn using the card. We issued a further appeal in June as enquiries continued.
Be cautious when using cash machinesWe also want residents to take particular care when withdrawing money from ATMs. Distraction thieves may watch someone entering their PIN before attempting to obtain their card or cash. They can work alone or as part of a group, with one person distracting the victim while another takes their belongings. A distraction could appear completely innocent. Someone might try to start a conversation, point out something nearby, stand unusually close to you or otherwise encourage you to look away from the cash machine. If somebody approaches you while you are making a withdrawal, stay focused on your card and cash. Do not allow yourself to be rushed and never reveal your PIN. Before using an ATM, take a moment to look around. If somebody is standing too close or their behaviour makes you uncomfortable, consider using another machine or withdrawing money inside a bank or other secure location. Cover the keypad when entering your PIN and put your card and cash away securely before leaving. If your card is unexpectedly retained by a machine, do not accept help from a stranger. Contact your bank or the ATM provider directly and remain particularly alert to anyone who approaches you.
Protect yourself from pickpocketsPickpockets often look for opportunities where valuables are easy to reach. A phone in an open coat pocket, a wallet in a back pocket or a purse near the top of an unfastened handbag can all become targets. You can reduce the risk by keeping bags closed and secure, carrying handbags in front of you or across your body, and keeping wallets and phones in zipped or buttoned pockets. Return your bank card to your purse or wallet immediately after using it and avoid carrying large amounts of cash unless necessary. Be particularly aware of your belongings in crowded locations, queues, shops, public transport areas and other places where people may bump into or stand close to one another. Having a zipped bag does not mean valuables are completely protected. Keep your bag where you can see or feel it rather than behind you, and never leave a purse, wallet or phone unattended.
If something does not feel right, move away
Distraction is one of the techniques thieves can use to create an opportunity. If a stranger unexpectedly approaches you while you are handling money, using an ATM or putting your purse or wallet away, remain aware of your belongings. You do not have to engage with somebody who is making you uncomfortable. Move somewhere safer, such as inside a shop or bank, and seek assistance if necessary. If you believe your bank card has been stolen, contact your bank immediately so it can be blocked. Check your account for transactions you do not recognise and report the theft to police.
Anyone who witnesses suspicious behaviour or believes a theft has taken place can report it to West Midlands Police online or by calling 101. Always call 999 if a crime is taking place, someone is in immediate danger or a suspect is still at the scene. By remaining alert and taking a few simple precautions, residents can make it much harder for pickpockets and distraction thieves to take advantage. | ||||||
